Kinetic: A powerhouse in technological innovation
Like mechanical and quartz, Kinetic is a platform. Over the past 20 years, SEIKO has created on this platform a suite of Kinetic movements, each bringing unique features to the consumer.
It was at the 1986 Basel Fair that SEIKO unveiled its first Kinetic prototype. Introduced under the trial name of 'AGM', it was the first watch in the world to convert kinetic movement into electrical energy. It was the first step in a development that, 20 years later, has made Kinetic synonymous with environmental friendliness, high performance and long-lasting convenience to a generation of users worldwide. From the launch in 1988 of the first commercially available watch (then under the new name AGS) until today, over eight million Kinetic watches have been sold (as of 2007).
In 1998, Kinetic Auto Relay was released, extending the 'at-rest' operating period of the watch to a remarkable 4 years. 1999 saw the launch of the Ultimate Kinetic Chronograph, a masterpiece which fused the very best of SEIKO's mechanical and electronic watch making skills, and in 2003 another Kinetic Chronograph was launched. At Baselworld 2005, the Kinetic Perpetual made its first appearance, combining Kinetic convenience and longevity with a perpetual calendar, correct to the year 2100. In 2007, SEIKO's emotional technology Kinetic Direct Drive is introduced.

This review is from: Seiko Men's SUN007 Kinetic GMT Black Ion Watch (Watch) Seiko initially released its "Kinetic" Movement almost a decade ago and, over the years, they've repeatedly upgraded the technology. While I understand that some early movements had 'issues' (like short-life capacitors, excessive gear-train backlash, etc.), I have to 'give credit where credit is due' and add that Seiko effectively addressed and resolved these problems. In my honest opinion, they now have an outstanding and quite practical (plus relatively-inexpensive) alternative to regular, battery-powered, quartz watches!Indeed, my new SUN007 (that I purchased from Amazon) efficiently (and elegantly) combines the impeccable accuracy of a quartz watch with the auto-winding capability of a mechanical design. The result is a watch that has the best of BOTH worlds; i.e., a +1/sec. per month accuracy and NEVER needs a battery! For what it's worth, I really like the fact that, with the SUN007, at least, I'll never have to put everything on hold and make a trip to the...Read more 12 of 15 people found the following review helpful: By briankc (nj, usa) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Seiko Men's SUN007 Kinetic GMT Black Ion Watch (Watch) I purchased this watch from Amazon through a retailer named from Jomashop on 22 March 2009, it arrived at my home on 27 March 2009. Unfortunately, it stopped working on 29 April 2009 after just about 1 month of operation. One thing that I noticed about this watch that was unusual was that the kinetic indicator never showed more than 1-7 days worth of energy stored in it, though I wore it every day. On 28 April I noticed that the second hand was advancing in 2 second increments (indicating that it was running out of power), the next day the watch stopped operating.I have contacted Jomashop the retailer that sold this watch to me through Amazon.com regarding my options for return or repair. Hopefully I will have a good experience with either Jomashop or Seiko, though it is an enormous pain having to return a watch that I fully expected to be reliable. Overall, the watch is a very handsome timepiece, one thing that surprised/disapointed me about it was that it...Read more 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful: Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Seiko Men's SUN007 Kinetic GMT Black Ion Watch (Watch) The watch arrived with no problems. I was a little hesitant about it being able to charge itself up due to the directions which state it needs a lot of wrist action to get fully charged. I'm not as physically active as I once was (64 y/o) and I was dreading buying an automatic winder; the damn things are really expensive. But as it has developed it took less than a month for it to be fully charged just w/my normal daily motions (I do an elliptical x3 for an hour at the gym weekly tho). It keeps regular quartz time-which is only a few seconds off per month usually. This watch is big/heavy-but I like it. I think it looks kool; all black. The one con appears to be that the black on my band is wearing off where I clunk it against things as well as the clasp where it makes contact with my desk etc.; not bad-but noticing the steel color underneath. A very nice looking and well functioning watch in my opinion. I would recommend it. |
