Product Review

Offering a fashionable straight-lined retro look, this Casio G-Shock men's digital sport watch (model GW056A-1V) is solar-powered and wirelessly receives atomic time updates. The black octagonal case is accented by a silver top ring, and it's completed by a textured black resin strap. It offers a 1/100-second stopwatch with a 60-minute measuring capacity as well as four independent daily alarms (with one snooze alarm), world time from 48 cities, and an autocalendar (to the year 2039). And because it's solar-powered--charging in either sunlight or indoor light--you'll never have to deal with changing the battery. Other features include a scratch-resistant mineral crystal, AfterGlow LED electro-luminescent backlight, and water resistance to 200 meters (660 feet)--suitable for recreational scuba diving.

This radio-controlled watch receives a time calibration signal transmitted from Fort Collins, Colorado, and signal reception is possible within a radius of about 2,000 miles from the Fort Collins transmitter. You can choose to automatically receive this signal four times a day, or manually update the watch to the atomic clock.

Since "atomic" watches contain radio receivers, they've been too big for me. This one is just slightly thicker than a standard watch. The radio reception is great. The directions say to place it near a window for setting, but when daylight savings time came, I was sleeping nowhere near a window & it was set correctly when I awoke.

It is one of the better looking digitals I've seen. The digits are well formed from lots of dots, so a 3 does not look like an 8 with some bars removed. With all the progress in LCD displays, I cannot imagine why watch makers have stuck with such antiquated technology. The buttons are in the standard places for a Casio but are recessed so it doesn't look quite as geeky. The band is preformed to curve so it fits even my skinny wrists well.

The alarm is a gentle beeping sound that stops on its own after 10 seconds or so. If you need more to wake up to, it may be too quiet. For me, it's perfect.

My only complaint is that it...Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Slim style, February 6, 2009

Slim style makes for a surreptitious look that belies the rugged and durable qualities of this accurate timepiece. Simple to operate, easy to see and comfortable to wear, the retro-styled contemporary watch looks a little different from the usual. The only down-side is the inevitable mineral glass lens that invites scratches. Why Casio do not manufacture a similar watch with a sapphire crystal lens is difficult to understand; this problem extends through their wider range (some Oceanus excepted, in my view. Now, make a solar, titanium version with a sapphire lens and see the sales rocket!!

The band is a bit large but the watch is great. From Kalamazoo, Mi. to Naples, Florida it resets on the beam every night, even on my arm. I do not know how long its life is, but right now, it was a great buy.
